The short version: HonestSky has no accounts, analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking. Forecast requests use coordinates rounded to a ~5km grid. Your saved cities and preferences remain on your device unless you opt in to background alerts. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address and, optionally, your zipcode. If you enable background alerts, we store your push token and rounded city coordinates until you opt out or delete your data. Optional trip monitoring also stores the travel details you choose to share, as described below.
This policy covers both the HonestSky mobile app ("the App") and the HonestSky website at honestsky.app ("the Website").
HonestSky ("we", "us", "our") is a free weather application and newsletter operated by Sean Hussey. Our website is honestsky.app.
When you grant location permission in the App, HonestSky accesses your approximate device location (latitude and longitude) to fetch weather data for your area. This data is:

This data is deleted when you uninstall the App. Forecast requests for saved cities and trips use rounded coordinates. Newsletter information, background alert registrations, and trip monitoring details are sent only when you opt in, as described below.
If you subscribe to the HonestSky newsletter through the App or Website, we collect and store:
Newsletter subscriber data is stored securely on Cloudflare KV. We do not share this data with any third party except as necessary to deliver the newsletter itself.
Zipcode usage: Your zipcode is used exclusively to personalize the weather forecast section of the HonestSky newsletter. It is not used for tracking, advertising, analytics, or any purpose within the App itself. You can subscribe without providing a zipcode; you'll simply receive a general newsletter without a local forecast.
If you enable background severe weather alerts in the App, we collect and store:
This data is used solely to check for severe weather alerts at your selected locations every 5 minutes and deliver push notifications. It is stored securely on Cloudflare KV and is deleted when your opt-out successfully reaches our server (toggle off "Background Alerts" in Settings).
We do not use push tokens for tracking, advertising, analytics, or any purpose other than delivering severe weather alerts you requested.
Trips and packing checklists are stored on your device. A trip widget uses the shared app storage on your device and requests forecasts for rounded destination coordinates. Your packing checklist and cold/warm comfort preference are not sent to our trip-monitoring server.
When you enable monitoring for a trip, we store its destination and optional departure place names, rounded coordinates, time zones, dates, selected activities, travel mode, notification language, any alert-pause expiry, push token, a pseudonymous installation identifier, and a hash of an installation secret. Cloudflare Durable Objects store these records and forecast comparison baselines. We check available forecasts approximately hourly and send a notification when a meaningful change is detected. Expo and Apple or Google receive the push token and notification content, which can include the destination, travel date, and weather change.
Turning monitoring off or removing a trip deletes its watch and forecast baseline after the app successfully contacts our server. An expired trip is removed during the next scheduled server check. The push token is removed when no watched trips remain. An authentication hash can remain to protect the installation from unauthorized registrations; Settings → Delete My Data removes the entire trip-monitoring record. Uninstalling alone does not immediately stop monitoring, but trip expiry still applies.
On compatible iPhones, you can request a packing summary using Apple Intelligence. This feature uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework. The supplied packing suggestions and generated summary are processed locally; they are not sent to HonestSky or a paid AI API. The forecast and packing checklist work without this feature.
Widgets share selected cities, temporary trip destinations and dates, rounded coordinates, display preferences, and cached forecasts with the app through local shared storage. If you install HonestSky on a paired Apple Watch, Apple WatchConnectivity transfers this weather context to your watch. Monitoring credentials and push tokens are not included. Widgets and the watch can request updated forecasts from our weather API using rounded coordinates. Their refresh timing is controlled by the operating system.
Removing a city or trip updates this shared context when the app next runs and the watch reconnects. A disconnected watch can retain its previous local cache until then. Temporary trips stop displaying after their end date. Pausing trip notifications does not stop forecast checks or delete the trip.
HonestSky fetches weather data from the following free, public APIs:
Weather and place-name requests use rounded coordinates. Map and radar providers receive requests for the map areas you view; Apple Maps or Google Maps supplies the base map. These services may receive your IP address and have their own privacy policies.
We use no advertising SDKs, no analytics SDKs (no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Mixpanel, no Amplitude), and no social media SDKs.
HonestSky has no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or external payment links.
HonestSky does not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. Newsletter subscriptions require an email address and are intended for users age 13 or older. Background alerts collect only the technical data described above when a user opts in.

App data: Uninstalling HonestSky deletes local App data. If you enabled push alerts or joined the newsletter, use Settings → Delete My Data before uninstalling to remove the associated server-side records.
Newsletter data: You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email. To request complete deletion of your newsletter data (email and zipcode), contact [email protected].
Push alert data: Toggle off "Background Alerts" in Settings to delete your severe-weather push registration after the app successfully contacts our server. Trip monitoring is managed separately.
Trip monitoring: Turn off monitoring or remove a trip to delete its watch, or use Delete My Data to remove the entire trip-monitoring record. These actions require a successful server connection.
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Significant changes will be noted in App release notes and/or the newsletter.
