Privacy Policy

The short version: The HonestSky app collects no personal data. We have no accounts, no analytics, no advertising SDKs, and no tracking of any kind. Your saved cities and preferences are stored on your device only. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address and, optionally, your zipcode to personalize your newsletter forecast. If you opt in to background severe weather alerts, we store your push token and city coordinates — deleted immediately when you opt out.

This policy covers both the HonestSky mobile app ("the App") and the HonestSky website at honestsky.app ("the Website").

1. Who we are

HonestSky ("we", "us", "our") is a free weather application and newsletter operated by Sean Hussey. Our website is honestsky.app.

2. Data we collect

2.1 Data we do NOT collect

No account creation or authentication data
No advertising identifiers (IDFA, GAID)
No device fingerprinting
No analytics or usage tracking in the App
No crash reporting that includes user-identifiable data
No cookies on our Website (beyond Cloudflare security cookies)

2.2 Location data (App only)

When you grant location permission in the App, HonestSky accesses your approximate device location (latitude and longitude) to fetch weather data for your area. This data is:

Sent to weather APIs (Open-Meteo, weather.gov, MeteoAlarm, Environment Canada, RainViewer) to retrieve forecasts and alerts
Rounded to a ~5km grid by our edge proxy before forwarding to upstream APIs
Never stored on our servers. Our Cloudflare Workers are stateless; cached responses use the grid coordinate as a key, not your precise location
Never shared with third parties for advertising, analytics, or any other purpose

Location permission is optional. You can use HonestSky by searching for cities manually.

2.3 On-device storage (App only)

HonestSky stores the following data locally on your device:

Saved city names, coordinates, and display order
Unit preferences (temperature, wind, pressure, time format)
Theme preference (dark, light, system)
Cached weather data (auto-expires)
Onboarding completion flag
Donation prompt timing flags
Newsletter email and zipcode (if you subscribed)

This data never leaves your device (except as described below for the newsletter) and is deleted when you uninstall the App.

2.4 Newsletter data

If you subscribe to the HonestSky newsletter through the App or Website, we collect and store:

Your email address — required to send you the newsletter
Your zipcode (optional) — used solely to include a local weather forecast in your newsletter. We do not convert your zipcode to precise coordinates, sell it, or use it for any purpose other than customizing the weather portion of your newsletter
Your language preference — to send the newsletter in your preferred language
Subscription date — for record-keeping

Newsletter subscriber data is stored securely on Cloudflare KV. We do not share this data with any third party except as necessary to deliver the newsletter itself.

Zipcode usage: Your zipcode is used exclusively to personalize the weather forecast section of the HonestSky newsletter. It is not used for tracking, advertising, analytics, or any purpose within the App itself. You can subscribe without providing a zipcode; you'll simply receive a general newsletter without a local forecast.

2.5 Push notification data (opt-in)

If you enable background severe weather alerts in the App, we collect and store:

Your push token — an opaque device identifier issued by Apple (APNs) or Google (FCM). It is not linked to your identity
Selected city coordinates — rounded to a ~5km grid, the same grid used for weather caching

This data is used solely to check for severe weather alerts at your selected locations every 5 minutes and deliver push notifications. It is stored securely on Cloudflare KV and is immediately deleted when you opt out (toggle off "Background Alerts" in Settings).

We do not use push tokens for tracking, advertising, analytics, or any purpose other than delivering severe weather alerts you requested.

3. Third-party services

3.1 Weather data providers

HonestSky fetches weather data from the following free, public APIs:

Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) — forecasts, air quality
National Weather Service (weather.gov) — US alerts, forecast maps
MeteoAlarm (meteoalarm.org) — EU alerts
Environment Canada (weather.gc.ca) — Canadian alerts
RainViewer (rainviewer.com) — radar imagery

When you use the App, your approximate location (rounded to a ~5km grid) is sent to these services to retrieve weather data. These services have their own privacy policies.

3.2 Infrastructure

Cloudflare — hosts our API, Website, and newsletter/push subscriber data
Expo Push Service (expo.dev) — routes push notifications to Apple (APNs) and Google (FCM). Only receives push tokens and notification content; no user-identifiable data

3.3 What we don't use

We use no advertising SDKs, no analytics SDKs (no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Mixpanel, no Amplitude), and no social media SDKs.

4. In-app purchases

HonestSky offers optional tip-jar donations through Apple App Store and Google Play Store. These transactions are processed entirely by Apple/Google. We do not collect or store any payment information.

5. Children's privacy

HonestSky does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The App collects no personal data from any user. Newsletter subscriptions require an email address, and we assume all subscribers are 13 or older.

6. GDPR (European Union)

For users in the European Economic Area:

Legal basis: Legitimate interest (providing weather data you requested); consent (newsletter subscription)
Data collected in App: None that identifies you personally
Data collected via newsletter: Email address, optional zipcode, language preference
Data collected via push alerts (opt-in): Push token, selected city coordinates (~5km grid)
Data retention: Cached weather data expires within hours. Newsletter data is retained until you unsubscribe
Cross-border transfers: Weather API requests are routed through Cloudflare's global network. Newsletter data is stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure
Your rights: You may request access to, rectification of, or erasure of your newsletter data at any time by contacting [email protected]. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter via the link in any email
Data Protection Officer: Not required given the minimal and non-sensitive nature of data processed

7. CCPA/CPRA (California)

For California residents:

Categories of personal information collected: Email address and zipcode (newsletter subscribers only); push token and city coordinates (push alert subscribers only)
Sale or sharing of personal information: We do not sell or share any personal information
Right to know, delete, correct: Contact [email protected] to exercise these rights regarding newsletter data
Non-discrimination: All users receive identical App functionality regardless of privacy choices

8. Data deletion

App data: Since HonestSky has no accounts and stores all App data on-device, uninstalling the App permanently deletes all your App data. There is no server-side App data to delete.

Newsletter data: You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email. To request complete deletion of your newsletter data (email and zipcode), contact [email protected].

Push alert data: Toggle off "Background Alerts" in Settings to immediately delete your push token and city coordinates from our servers.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Significant changes will be noted in App release notes and/or the newsletter.
